To our dear friends and family:

In January, the Des Moines Community met for a memorial for Rabbi Marshall and Shirley Berg. (Shirley passed away the 3rd of Sivan 5777 and shortly after Rabbi Berg passed away 23rd of Kislev 5778). Prior to the memorial, we were in touch with the Bergs’ children. They expressed a strong and specific desire to keep their parents’ memory alive in Des Moines Iowa.

For over 45 years Rabbi and Shirley always had an open home; their love for their fellow Jew and all humanity was unmatched. Everyone felt very much at home in the Berg “home away from home” and it was not unusual for a meeting at a Simcha or Berg-hosted Shabbaton to turn into lifelong commitments to Judaism.

Lubavitch Of Iowa's JRC, together with Rabbi and Shirley’s children, Dov, Joel and Naomi have initiated the launch of a fundraiser to purchase a home that will be dedicated in their parents name's and used as a much-needed guest house for many who have expressed interest to live and observe a complete and fulfilling Shabbos experience.

The guest house will be used for individuals or families who would like to join the community for a Shabbat, Yom Tov—or just coming to town for a visit. It will be a welcoming, warm Jewish home that will continue the Berg’s open-door tradition. One of the greatest merits HaShem found in Avraham Avinu, our father Abraham, was how he would run to welcome and serve the stranger, the wayfarer, and other guests.

We have undertaken to raise the funds for this endeavor and keep the Berg family’s vision alive. The fundraising goal is $400,000.00. This amount will be used to purchase, outfit, supply, and maintain the Rabbi Marshall and Shirley Berg Shabbos Guest House and is completely tax-deductible.

We encourage everyone to join and help in this great Mitzvah.

Please spread the word and help us reach our goal!!!
